Linux / chmod

Calculate chmod permissions.

Choose who can read, write and execute. Calculation happens in your browser: the entered path stays in this tab.

Three digits from 0 to 7. The command uses Bash/POSIX syntax on GNU/Linux.

How to read the result

The digits represent owner, group and other users. Each digit adds read (4), write (2) and execute (1). For example, 7 means 4 + 2 + 1, or rwx.

On a directory, x grants search/traversal. This calculator covers the nine standard rwx bits; it does not inspect ownership, ACLs, special bits or parent-directory permissions.

The command targets the specified path and is not recursive. Review the intended permissions before running it in your terminal.
